Local Beaches

Head to the beach for sand, surf and fun

Tropical Sanibel and Captiva Islands are the jewels of Southwest Florida. These barrier islands, just across the causeway from Fort Myers, are world-renowned for the seashells that cover their white, sandy beaches. Nearly half of Sanibel is set aside as a nature preserve, so a visit will naturally include lots of wildlife sightings, and bird watchers will be thrilled. Sanibel's J.N. 'Ding' Darling Wildlife Reserve is a national park, accessible by car, bicycle or naturalist-led trolley. But if you like a different type of stimulation, you can shop 'til you drop on Periwinkle Way.

Captiva, the sister island to Sanibel, has a charming downtown area called 'the Village,' where you'll discover lots of live music, restaurants with outdoor seating, art galleries and marinas. The main event on west-facing Captiva is the nightly sunset, which draws everyone to the beach for 'oohs,' 'aahs' and picture-taking. Historic Chapel by the Sea is the setting for many an island wedding, as is the beach. Captiva is the gateway to the out-islands of North Captiva, Cabbage Key, Useppa and Cayo Costa.

Sanibel and Captiva Islands are fantastic for families, couples, friends or solo travelers. The most difficult decision of your day might be 'grouper sandwich, or crab cakes?' While away your hours picking up seashells, photographing birds, snoozing by the sea, fishing or biking Sanibel's 17 miles of bike paths. You'll also be able to enjoy unlimited water sports, tennis and golf. High season on the islands is from President's Day weekend until 2 weeks past Easter. November and May are particularly lovely without being crowded.
